The attention and care shown to the elderly have an important impact on increasing their social activity and making them feel like an integral part of society.
The chairperson of the Public Union for Support of Socio-Economic and Agricultural Development, Zulfiyya Nuriyeva, in a statement to F4Media.az on the occasion of 1 October – International Day of Older Persons, spoke about the work being done in Azerbaijan in the direction of social protection and integration of the elderly into society.
According to Z. Nuriyeva, the effective organization of the elderly’s leisure time and their involvement in various social and cultural events have a positive effect on their daily lives.
She stated that various events aimed at the socialization of residents are held at the Home for the Elderly operating under the Social Services Agency subordinate to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Population. The participation of the elderly in football competitions together with staff, the preparation of theatrical performances, and the organization of joint events with beneficiaries of the DOST Inclusive Center are among these activities.
“Such projects create smiles on the faces of the elderly and strengthen their attachment to life,” Z. Nuriyeva emphasized.
Daily services add color to the lives of the elderly
According to the chairperson of the NGO, daytime services for the elderly are currently provided in six areas, including Baku. In these centers, 30 elderly people are provided with services in various directions every day.
Here, the nutrition of the elderly is ensured, board games are organized, birthdays are celebrated, and conditions are created for communication and socialization. At the same time, their trips to museums, various events, and tours are organized.
Z. Nuriyeva noted that one of the main goals of these services is to create an opportunity for the elderly to spend their time in a more interesting and effective way, while also supporting the preservation of their relationships with family members.
“Sometimes children and grandchildren bring the elderly to the center in the morning and take them back themselves in the evening. This is a very good result. Because the elderly person both socializes during the day and does not separate from their family and relatives,” she stated.
A bridge between generations
Z. Nuriyeva believes that the involvement of the elderly in social life is important not only for themselves, but also from the perspective of strengthening intergenerational relations.
According to her, establishing cooperation between centers for the elderly and youth centers in the regions yields positive results. The participation of young people together with the elderly in social projects, competitions, and various events creates an opportunity for strengthening mutual communication and transmitting national and moral values to the younger generation.
She added that social services are not limited only to centers. Mobile social services are also provided to elderly people living alone and unable to leave home.
“Ensuring that they are provided with the social services they need at home is extremely important,” Z. Nuriyeva noted.
Z. Nuriyeva, on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, wished all the elderly a long life and good health, and emphasized the importance of their broader use of the social opportunities created by the state.
