Russia and Ukraine have carried out a prisoner exchange under the "270 for 270" formula, the Russian Defence Ministry reported. Each side released 270 people.
As the Russian Defence Ministry reported, the servicemen who returned from captivity are in Belarus. They are being worked with by Russian Presidential Commissioner for Human Rights Yana Lantratova.
Previous exchange
The previous prisoner exchange took place on 19 August. On that occasion, 103 Russian servicemen returned home. The same number of people was handed over to the Ukrainian side.
Background to the conflict
Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on 24 February 2022. President Vladimir Putin named its goal as "protecting people who, for eight years, have been subjected to genocide by the Kyiv regime". According to him, it is planned to carry out "demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine" and to bring to trial all military criminals responsible for "bloody crimes against peaceful residents" of Donbas.
In response, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia.
