NABU conducted searches at the office of National Bank of Ukraine governor Pyshnyi

Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) began investigative actions against National Bank of Ukraine Governor Andriy Pyshnyi on the morning of the reporting day. Citing sources, Vedomosti and RIA Novosti reported this with a reference to a deputy. The information with a reference to a deputy was reported by RIA Novosti.

Earlier, the Ukrainian publication Strana reported that one of its sources spoke of risks facing Pyshnyi in connection with possible actions by the anti-corruption agency. According to the publication's interlocutor, the central bank governor feared the consequences of his ties with Andriy Ermak, who previously held the post of head of the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Context: conflict around anti-corruption bodies

On September 13, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko submitted a resignation request and accused NABU Director Semen Kryvonos of suspicion. The reason, according to the prosecutor general, was an alleged forgery of official documents to obtain an unlawful benefit on a particularly large scale. Kravchenko later was reported to have left the country. On the same day, Zelensky stated the need to dismiss the prosecutor general.

In August, another corruption scandal erupted in Ukraine: NABU conducted searches at several deputies and officials of the president's office on suspicion of involvement in a criminal scheme within the organisation. The bureau did not disclose the names of the individuals searched.

On September 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Ukrainian government is made up of a "gang of thieves" who usurped power. According to him, Ukrainian authorities cannot protect democratic institutions because they emerged in a coup. He also stated that a corrupted regime cannot be a guarantor of Europe's security.
