Moscow, September 28, 2026. Walking, swimming and cycling can replace running for those who are advised against it, orthopedist Andrey Litvinenko said.
According to him, swimming and cycling are suitable in almost any condition, while walking has a universal nature of exercise and is included in all rehabilitation programs.
Swimming and cycling are permitted in almost any condition. Walking is a universal form of exercise, it is included in all rehabilitation programs. Therapeutic physical training is also good, especially in groups of 8-10 people with an instructor.
Litvinenko noted that running is not recommended for people with signs of obesity. It can be replaced, according to the orthopedist, with walking for several hours — with breaks, fluid replenishment and a mandatory diet.
In addition, running is not recommended for chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system and the cardiovascular system, if physical exercise is contraindicated. Restrictions also apply to recent injuries and reconstructive surgeries.
After cartilage replacement, running and jumping are not recommended for up to six months, or even a year. With abdominal surgeries and hernias, running can increase intra-abdominal pressure and lead to recurrence. After joint replacement, running is also prohibited.
As alternatives to running, Litvinenko named swimming, cycling, an exercise bike, walking and therapeutic physical training.
